BACKGROUND
The role of a Security Guard has changed dramatically over the past few decades. Before the introduction of the Private Security Industry Act 2001 the industry was unregulated which means that anyone could start a career as a Security Guard without formal training and certifications.
However, in modern-day security, the Act revolutionised the private security industry by establishing a regulatory body in 2003 called the Security Industry Authority (SIA). Its primary objective is to ensure that anyone wanting to start a career as a Security Guard is eligible, properly trained by an approved centre, and subsequently applies for a license to work in the industry. Each of these components ensures that security personnel are qualified, competent, and trusted to perform their roles effectively.
Here’s how these three aspects function:
ELIGIBILITY
To be eligible for an SIA Security Guard Licence, applicants must be 18 years old and have the legal right to work in the UK.
Must be able to provide a valid identification as per Security Industry Authority standards
Hold a Level 3 Emergency First Aid at Work certificate
Must undergo a standard DBS check that helps ensure that individuals working in security roles do not have a criminal history that would disqualify them from being employed in the sector.
TRAINING
There are multiple types of training but for the Security Guard, the minimum training required is Level 2 Award in Security Guarding.
To achieve the qualification, learners must complete all three units, totalling 4 credits:
Unit 1: Principles of Working in the Private Security Industry
Unit 2: Principles of Working as a Security Officer in the Private Security Industry
Unit 3: Application of Conflict Management Skills in the Private Security Industry
