Who is this qualification for?
From 1 April 2025, if you want to renew your SIA Door Supervisor licence, you must attain the new ‘refresher’ qualification. This qualification aims to equip learners with updated knowledge, skills, and understanding necessary to perform effectively as a Door Supervisor in the private security industry.
Course Content
To be awarded this qualification learners must achieve 2 mandatory units as outlined below;
Unit 1: Principles of Working as a Door Supervisor in the Private Security Industry (Refresher)
55 Minutes Exam – 35 Questions (71% Pass Mark) | Practical Scenario Assessments & Use of Communications Devices
- How to Conduct Effective Search Procedures
- How to Keep Vulnerable People Safe
- How To Safeguard The Public From Incidents of Spiking
- Understand Terror Threats and the Role of Security Operative in the Event of A Threat
Unit 2: Application of Physical Intervention Skills in the Private Security Industry (Refresher)
45 Minutes Exam – 30 Questions (80% Pass Mark)
- Know the Implication of Physical Intervention & Their Use
- Know the Risks Associated with using Physical Interventions
- How To Reduce The Risks Associated with Physical Intervention
- Proficiently & Safely Use Physical Skills For Protection
- Be Able To Use Non-pain Compliant Standing, Holding and Escorting Techniques Safely.
Eligibility
To be eligible to undertake the training, candidates must be able to evidence the following
- Must be able to meet the ID requirements set by the SIA
- Must hold a valid Emergency First Aid certificate that meets the requirements of the Health & Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981*
- Undertake online basic English assessments achieving appropriate results

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does an SIA licence cost and can VIRPIO SECURITY assist with funding?
£184 for your new/renewal frontline licence. In some cases, we are able to assist you with the funding of your licence depending on your residency status and earnings or your current economic situation. Speak to our representative about the options available to you.
I have criminal convictions; can I still apply for SIA licence?
This is not at the discretion of VIRPIO SECURITY. The SIA website has a criminal records indicator which will give you some idea as to whether or not you would be eligible to renewal for a licence.
How long does my Door Supervisor Refresher Qualification last for?
Your Level 2 Door Supervisor Refresher qualification will lasts for 3 years from the date you successfully complete the training and assessment and renewed the physical licence. After 3 years, if refresher training remains a mandatory requirement, you will likely need to undergo it again every three years when renewing your license to continue working as a Door Supervisor legally.
How long does it take to renew my SIA licence?
The Security Industry Authority aims to process all applications within 25 working days. However, on average the entire process often takes around 6 weeks.
What if I fail elements of my training?
VIRPIO SECURITY will provide candidates with one free re-sit (funded candidates only) for formal examinations. This will be subject to a threshold being met through mock exams and at the discretion of your course tutor. Any further re-sits will be at a cost of £50 per module.
Do I have to renew my licence?
Your licence will expire three years from the date it was issued. Once it expires, you cannot legally work as a door supervisor. If you wish to continue working, you must renew it. You can begin renewing your current SIA Door Supervisor Licence up to four months before its expiration. The new licence will only become active once your existing licence has expired. Please note that the application fee is £184 and is non-refundable.
